Canada: schools and universities

Education in Canada is run by the provinces and territories, and public schools are widely used by newcomers. International and private schools are mostly in the big cities.

Schools

Public schools are free for residents and are the default choice for most families. Children of temporary residents are often eligible too, but the rules vary by province and by the parent's permit. Private and international schools are found mainly in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Ottawa. Families usually choose them for the IB Diploma, smaller classes or boarding. The list of international schools in Toronto gives an idea of the range in the largest city.

Universities

Canadian universities teach in English or French, or both. Quebec has French-language and English-language universities, and students going there also need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ). In Ontario, undergraduate applications go through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre. Elsewhere, students apply to each university.

International students need a study permit, and in most cases a provincial or territorial attestation letter, which the university or college helps arrange.

Before you apply

  • Check the school district's rules for your permit type before you choose where to live.
  • Students heading to Quebec should allow time for the CAQ before the study permit.
  • Health cover for international students depends on the province. Ask the university what it provides.
