United Kingdom: schools and universities
The UK has a large independent school sector, including boarding schools, alongside state schools and a smaller number of international schools. Education is run separately in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so qualifications and school ages differ slightly between them.

Schools
Most international families in London choose between British independent schools and international schools that teach the IB or a national curriculum. Many independent schools set their own entry tests at 4, 7, 11, 13 or 16, often a year or more ahead. Outside London, boarding schools take many pupils from abroad.
State schools are free and open to children who are living in the UK lawfully, and many international families use them. Places are allocated by the local council, usually by distance from home, so the address you rent can decide the school.
Universities
Applications to most undergraduate courses go through UCAS. The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is in mid-October, a year before the course starts, and the main deadline for most other courses is at the end of January. Postgraduate applications usually go to each university directly. The list of universities in the UK is one way to start a shortlist.
International students on a student visa pay the Immigration Health Surcharge as part of the visa application, which gives access to the National Health Service.
Before you apply
- For state schools, check the council's admissions rules before you sign a lease.
- For independent schools, ask about entry test dates as early as you can.
- University applicants from abroad should check whether their school qualifications meet the course's entry requirements or need a foundation year.
